Red light therapy – technically photobiomodulation – has quickly become a studio segment of its own in Zurich: from the self-service studio open 365 days a year from 6 am, via mindfulness studios in Seefeld with full-body beds, to the dermatology practice with a light cabin. What matters are wavelengths (typically 630/660 nm red and 810–850 nm near-infrared), power density and whether the whole body or just one area is irradiated. Our comparison shows which providers offer full-body applications, which wavelengths they state and how much a session costs – from CHF 20 in the self-service studio to physician-supervised applications.

09 How Red light works – and what the evidence says
Red and near-infrared light penetrates a few millimetres to centimetres into tissue and is absorbed there by enzymes of the mitochondria (mainly cytochrome c oxidase). The assumed mechanism: increased ATP production, altered signalling pathways and modulation of inflammatory processes.
Studies show effects on skin appearance and wound healing, muscle recovery after exertion and certain pain conditions; the quality of evidence varies greatly by application and device. Home devices and masks have far less power than full-body beds in a studio.
A session lasts 10 to 20 minutes; protective goggles are recommended. Red light is not to be confused with infrared heat cabins, which work mainly through heat.
