Hormone therapy (bioidentical hormones, HRT)in Zurich

Hormone optimisation has arrived in longevity medicine: bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) in the menopause, testosterone therapy for proven deficiency in men, thyroid and adrenal diagnostics. In Zurich, specialised gynaecology and men’s health practices, functional medicine practices and longevity clinics offer these therapies. Because hormones are potent substances, three criteria are decisive: endocrinology expertise, a diagnostics-based prescription (blood work instead of questionnaire) and regular monitoring. Our comparison shows exactly these three points for every provider.

How Hormone therapy works – and what the evidence says

Bioidentical hormones are chemically identical to the body’s own (estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA) and are given as gel, patch, capsule or injection. Prescription is based on symptoms plus laboratory diagnostics (serum, sometimes saliva or urine).

For women in perimenopause and menopause, hormone replacement therapy – started in good time – is effective against hot flushes, sleep disorders and bone loss; the risk assessment has become more nuanced in recent years. In men, testosterone therapy is established for laboratory-confirmed hypogonadism; as “anti-ageing” with normal values it is not indicated.

Monitoring (blood work every 3 to 12 months, breast and prostate screening) is mandatory.

Frequently asked questions about Hormone therapy in Zurich

How much does hormone therapy cost in Zurich?

The initial consultation is usually CHF 200 to 400, laboratory analyses CHF 150 to 500. With a medical indication (e.g. menopausal symptoms, proven testosterone deficiency) basic insurance covers medical services and licensed preparations. Longevity programmes without indication are self-pay.

What are bioidentical hormones?

Hormones that correspond chemically exactly to the body’s own – such as estradiol, micronised progesterone or testosterone. They are given as gel, patch, capsule or injection and are available as licensed medicines or pharmacy preparations.

Is testosterone therapy an anti-ageing remedy?

Therapy is indicated only for laboratory-confirmed testosterone deficiency with symptoms. With normal values the risks outweigh the benefits (blood count, prostate, fertility). Serious practices do not prescribe without two morning blood samples.

How often are checks needed?

In the first year usually every three months with blood work and dose adjustment, later every six to twelve months – supplemented by the usual screening examinations.

What risks does hormone replacement therapy have?

Depending on preparation, dose and start: slightly increased thrombosis or breast cancer risk with certain combinations, in men polycythaemia and prostate aspects. Transdermal application and early start are considered more favourable. The individual benefit-risk assessment is part of every serious consultation.
