IHHT – intermittent hypoxia-hyperoxia training, often marketed as “cell training” or “simulated altitude training” – has spread in Zurich from physiotherapy studios to longevity clinics. You lie or sit with a breathing mask and alternately breathe oxygen-poor air (as at 3,000 to 6,000 metres) and oxygen-rich air; a pulse oximeter controls the intervals. The aim is adaptation of the mitochondria and oxygen transport. Our comparison shows where IHHT is physician-supervised, where it can be combined with exercise on an ergometer or treadmill, and how single sessions, series and subscriptions differ in price.

08 How IHHT / altitude training works – and what the evidence says
During IHHT you breathe through a mask, alternating roughly three to seven minutes of hypoxic air (9–14% oxygen instead of 21%) with normoxic or hyperoxic air. A finger sensor monitors oxygen saturation and heart rate; the device adjusts the intervals individually.
The stimulus resembles a stay at altitude: the body activates the transcription factor HIF-1α, which among other things influences the formation of new mitochondria and blood vessels and the release of erythropoietin. Providers promise more energy, better regeneration and stress resilience.
Clinical data exist for heart failure, COPD, metabolic syndrome and cognitive parameters in older people – mostly small studies with positive signals. A series typically comprises 10 to 20 sessions of 40 to 60 minutes.
