Cryotherapy & cryo chamberin Zurich

Whole-body cryotherapy is probably the best-known longevity and recovery treatment in Zurich: two to five minutes at −85 to −110 °C in the cryo chamber, followed by the famous endorphin rush. What elite athletes have used for years is now accessible in Zurich-West, in longevity centres on Lake Zurich and in Winterthur. The differences between providers are considerable, though: electrically operated high-performance chambers with genuine −110 °C, nitrogen cryosaunas where the head stays outside the cabin, or classic ice baths. Our comparison lists type, minimum temperature, whether it is a full-body application and what a single session, multi-card and subscription cost.

How Cryotherapy works – and what the evidence says

In the cryo chamber the body reacts to the extreme cold stimulus with strong constriction of the blood vessels in skin and extremities; after leaving the chamber a strong reperfusion follows. At the same time endorphins and noradrenaline are released – which explains the euphoric effect that keeps many users coming back.

Electric chambers cool the air with compressors and often work with a pre-chamber and main chamber (e.g. −60 °C and −110 °C). Nitrogen cryosaunas generate cold with evaporating liquid nitrogen; the head stays outside and the temperature figures (down to −190 °C) refer to the gas stream, not to a uniform room temperature.

Effects on muscle soreness, inflammation markers and subjective recovery after exertion are documented; long-term effects in the sense of “living longer” are the subject of research, not proven.

Frequently asked questions about Cryotherapy in Zurich

How much does a cryo chamber cost in Zurich?

Single sessions in Zurich range from around CHF 30 to 60 depending on the provider. With multi-cards or subscriptions you often pay CHF 25 to 45 per session; new-customer offers are often cheaper still. The specific list prices are in the provider profiles.

How long does a cryo chamber session last?

The stay at −85 to −110 °C usually lasts two to five minutes – depending on chamber type, experience and tolerance. Including changing and induction, allow 15 to 20 minutes.

Electric cryo chamber or nitrogen cryosauna – which is better?

Electric chambers cool the whole body including the head evenly and without nitrogen gas; they are considered the reference method from medical cold therapy. Nitrogen cryosaunas are more compact and cheaper to run, the head stays outside and the temperature is uneven. Both trigger the cold stimulus – for comparability look at type and real temperature.

What do I wear in the cryo chamber?

Swimwear or underwear, plus socks, gloves, often a headband and mouth guard – the accessories are provided. Skin must be dry, jewellery stays outside.

Is the cryo chamber dangerous?

For healthy adults whole-body cryotherapy is safe when applied correctly. Contraindications include untreated high blood pressure, severe cardiovascular disease, cold urticaria, circulatory disorders and pregnancy. Serious providers check this before the first session.
